Sheila Fricker lit a candle on July 8th, 2013:
"So sorry for your loss. Ellen was a great aunt to all her nieces and taught us many things. I still have my christmas stocking that she made me and hang it up every year. I will always remember her garden and the little watermelons that she shared with us. She was especially kind to mom when she was sick and she took the time to read to her when she was in the hospital. I was hoping to see her this summer during my visit to Halifax. Teah and Hailey always ask about her and will remember her as Mrs. I. Teah still has a lot of the earrings that she gave her when she was working at Cape Smokey. We will always remember her great spirit and attitude and I can only hope that my girls will grow to have the same positive attitude and spirit. Hope to see everyone in July. "
Heather Dean lit a candle on June 28th, 2013:
"The photo album is a wonderful tribute. I watched the photos scroll through several times as they brought back such so many memories of the 1960s. Ellen was my crazy cousin who lived on the edge during our early adolescence. We laughed all day long doing whatever outside -she introduced me to the lake and all the neat hiding spots at Manitou. The old family photos on the porch railing and lawn are priceless. One of our fondest memories is our first visit to the northern tip of Cape Breton in June 1974 in our old beat-up Volvo with Casey and Christian helping Philip as toddlers "under the hood" - laughing with Ellen as she enjoyed every second of their serious auto mechanics lesson. God bless her wonderful spirit that she shared with us all.

Tracy Buchanan lit a candle on June 28th, 2013:
"Mrs. I was certainly one of a kind individual. She had one of the most vibrant and spirited souls of anyone I know. She was one of the people you like to surround yourself with because her positive spirit was contagious. Her energy and youthfulness made you happy just by being in her presence. She was a classy, creative, generous, elegant lady who I am forever grateful that she made a mark on all of my family’s heart.
I was called in to sub for Mrs. I and I always said it was hard going in to try to fill those shoes. Children adored her and mine were no exception. She introduced us to the world of Harry Potter and when the first movie came out, we all went to see it together. I remembering looking down the aisle at all the kids and Mrs. I’s excitement was not contained, as she sat there waiting for it to start with a wide smile. She taught us that it is ok to stay young forever. It is ok to let your enthusiasm show as much as you want.
When my son entered primary, he would be met each morning by the principal who would sing his name loudly. He would try to sneak by and this is how Mrs. I and my son’s game began. Mrs. I would try to slip him past Jeri without her noticing him. Disguises were popular attempts including the old glasses and mustache routine but somehow the principal always knew it was him. Until one day she had a surefire plan. She came to school with a suitcase on wheels! Yes, she stuffed my son into a suitcase-much to his delight. They had succeeded that day-two conspirators. I do not know which one was more excited at their success.
Mrs. I was so talented. Her cooking and baking were famous as well as her drawings on the school library windows. She was the first one to volunteer at face painting for any function. I remember her dying her hair blue for school and not realizing how long it would actually take to come out. Her house was not one you could miss on Halloween. She was beautiful inside and out. She embraced life with arms wide open and so many of us were lucky to receive the warmth and love from her as she did the embracing. My first garden was a result of her hard work and I am so grateful that every spring when it starts to bloom, it will be a reminder of this special lady.
As in Ellen’s classic ending to all her correspondence,
Cheers Mrs. I! Cheers to a wonderful woman who did so much living in her too short life. She has made the world a better place by her presence.
"
Shelby Buck lit a candle on June 28th, 2013:
"My first memory of Mrs. I is when she introduced me to the Harry Potter books, she would let me read ahead and when the series became a movie she came with us to see it. Just last year, over a dozen years since she first brought in the first book she and I raved about the wizarding world in universal and how we were both the tour guides for our families. It wasn’t just the Harry Potter series either, she brought me books from the other classrooms when I was bored with the ones in my own. She taught me patience; she had my second grade picture taped to the back of a work of art her son brought home from overseas, she saved that work for me as a graduation present, some people cannot keep gifts secret until Christmas. We read with her, baked with her and just ran around her amazing house looking at her craft supplies. Our family was special to her, I am so proud she picked us. We all thought she was so cool with her jewel tones and funky glasses, her expressions and her loudness. It never felt like she was there to work, it felt like she was there to see us, she wanted to be there at the school heart and soul. At Halloween we would have special treat bags at her house, she would ask me to help paint faces with her and got me out of the classroom whenever there was something creative and enjoyable to do around the school. The most important things I learned in school did not come from the curriculum. Mrs. I taught me that it is not only okay, but a wonderful thing to be passionate when your peers promote indifference and aloofness. It’s good to be different and to not even have a box to think outside of. She was the perfect combination of old soul and young at heart, there was no reason a six year old wouldn’t believe she was truly their friend.
A capital I. A reminder of how strange and wonderful life can be, that wonderful is strange. A reminder that friendships come in all shapes and sizes .The I is a reminder to pursue your passion, and fully, what is life without passion? If it is literature then read and write whenever you can, even under your desk when you should be paying attention. If it is your gardens, make your entire community bloom. The I is an idea that being creative is not an add on, but a way of life. The I suggests that “boring” may be one of the worst adjectives in this strange, wonderful, silly life. Most of all the I is a reminder to reach out every chance you have. You have the potential to impact someone’s life, to show them something that may shape their outlook on life."

"My grandmother was the best
Story teller, swimmer, drawer and grandmother. She told me stories of her past like when my dad and uncle Casey where sick and went dancing in the rain she was so mad that her hand went frew the window and she put a diaper on her bleeding hand because she didn't have any bandages. She also had lots of jobs, so many I lost count and I think so did she. But one of them was teaching and she made lots of kids happy by encouraging them. Anyone that met her loved her and I will miss her more then ever especially skipping across the side walk and stopping each time to throw rocks. She is unforgettable in the best of ways, I will miss her laugh, stories and hugs. I hope she is happy in heaven with her parents and family and I know she will always be there for me, watching down on me."
