God Bless Mrs. I"
Shelby Buck lit a candle on 06/28/2013:
"My first memory of Mrs. I is when she introduced me to the Harry Potter books, she would let me read ahead and when the series became a movie she came with us to see it. Just last year, over a dozen years since she first brought in the first book she and I raved about the wizarding world in universal and how we were both the tour guides for our families. It wasn’t just the Harry Potter series either, she brought me books from the other classrooms when I was bored with the ones in my own. She taught me patience; she had my second grade picture taped to the back of a work of art her son brought home from overseas, she saved that work for me as a graduation present, some people cannot keep gifts secret until Christmas. We read with her, baked with her and just ran around her amazing house looking at her craft supplies. Our family was special to her, I am so proud she picked us. We all thought she was so cool with her jewel tones and funky glasses, her expressions and her loudness. It never felt like she was there to work, it felt like she was there to see us, she wanted to be there at the school heart and soul. At Halloween we would have special treat bags at her house, she would ask me to help paint faces with her and got me out of the classroom whenever there was something creative and enjoyable to do around the school. The most important things I learned in school did not come from the curriculum. Mrs. I taught me that it is not only okay, but a wonderful thing to be passionate when your peers promote indifference and aloofness. It’s good to be different and to not even have a box to think outside of. She was the perfect combination of old soul and young at heart, there was no reason a six year old wouldn’t believe she was truly their friend.
A capital I. A reminder of how strange and wonderful life can be, that wonderful is strange. A reminder that friendships come in all shapes and sizes .The I is a reminder to pursue your passion, and fully, what is life without passion? If it is literature then read and write whenever you can, even under your desk when you should be paying attention. If it is your gardens, make your entire community bloom. The I is an idea that being creative is not an add on, but a way of life. The I suggests that “boring” may be one of the worst adjectives in this strange, wonderful, silly life. Most of all the I is a reminder to reach out every chance you have. You have the potential to impact someone’s life, to show them something that may shape their outlook on life."

"I am one of the staff at the Cancer Centre who had the priviledge of meeting Ellen. Her and I got very close over the month or two that I was helping her. I am so sorry to hear the news, but will always remember her as a wonderfully happy, caring person. We had great chats, lots of laughs and shared a special bond. I'll never forget her kind words that she said about me in the QEII times. Meeting people like her makes a job like mine VERY worthwhile, and I was beyond touched with what she said about me. I will carry those words with me forever. Words can't express how much she touched me, How greatful I was for her sweet appreciation, what a lovely soul she was, and how sad I was to hear of her passing. My thoughts are with her family. She will always be remembered xo Lisa Wadden"

"Ellen knew how to light up a room upon entering...she had that special quality of making every person feel unique in their own way. I simply loved being in her presence and am so thankful for having that opportunity. Big hugs to her entire family! She will never be forgotten!"
"My deepest sympathy is sent to you all. She could simply light up a room with her smile and friendliness. Students and staff loved their Mrs I. She will fondly be remembered!"
"I was lucky enough to meet Ellen when she shared her story with me during an interview for QEII Times and the QEII Foundation’s annual report. After only minutes of talking with Ellen I could tell she was a special lady – I could feel her smile and positive energy. We laughed a lot, and she shared stories about her life, but we mostly talked about her family, her kids, grandkids and other loved ones. She was so proud of her family and I loved listening to her words of wisdom – she reminded me a lot of my own grandmother. Although I only knew Ellen during her last few months, like most who had the pleasure of meeting her, I felt an instant connection. My thoughts are with her friends and family, who I can tell Ellen shared her most wonderful traits with. I’m so grateful I got to meet her. "
"Our family is blessed with many happy memories of Ellen, her Mum and Dad and siblings . "

"When I worked in the library at Cabot High, I would often "drop in" on Miss Ellie on my way home. The intended "short visit" would turn into hours of non stop laughter and good storytelling...times that I cherished. I have been blessed in my life by knowing some extraordinarily wonderful women and Miss Ellie was one of them. For that, I am extremely grateful. My heart is with you all at this time...she will live on in her children and grandchildren and in our memories. Thanks Ellen. "
